Philip C. Sedgwick: Screenwriter/Director

Can you describe a typical day on the job?

There is no typical day. When writing it can be a day of plotting out a story making notes sipping coffee and staring at clouds or pounding out a script on the computer. With directing there’s a heap to do. In the early stages it’s about thinking your way through the script conjuring shots making a shot list convening with the producer director of photography and lighting team on set rehearsing with talent. And whether writing or directing every day is fraught with challenges to address.

Everyday start when your energy is up and running. Stop when you reach your limit.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS CAREER PATH? WHAT OR WHO INSPIRED YOU TO DO SO?

I decided I wanted to tell stories and to entertain the masses into enlightenment. It was a long path decades-long to realize the calling in its totality.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY ARE SOME KEY PERSONALITY ASPECTS OR SKILLS FOR YOUR ROLE?

Perseverance self-discipline and organization.

What have you learned about yourself through the work that you do?

That there is no better fulfilment than inspiring others and that the spark of creative essence is rich within.

What’s been your best moment while doing your work?

Viewing the first script produced into a film on the big screen for the first time. Breathtaking!

A close second was stepping onto the dais to receive an award for Best Original Screenplay.

And a difficult moment?

So many to choose from. Hearing that a script sale would not occur because the production team broke up their personal relationship and were no longer professionally able to work together and produce my screenplay.

How do you keep going when things get really tough?

Suck it up and grind it out. But first step back from the overwhelm and watch a few amazingly wonderful inspiring movies such as BREAKER MORANT OFFICIAL REJECTION TRUMBO.

ARE THERE ANY SURPRISING OR ODD THINGS THAT PEOPLE WOULDN’T EXPECT IF THEY PICKED THIS CAREER?

Satisfaction beyond belief when a job is well done. A sense of destiny fulfilment.

What advice would you give to young people thinking of pursuing a career in this industry?

Never stop doing the creative work. Never. No matter how hard it gets. Get mad if you must. Stomp your feet. Spit into the wind. Then get back to it. Never quit. Do something every single day to push the goal forward.
